Ronald Spang

Ronald Spang Bass Trombone Ron Spang has been the bass trombonist with the River City Brass Band since the beginning of the 1990 season.A Pittsburgh native, Ron was always a trombone student of Matty Shiner.


Following his acquisition of a B. S. in Music Education degree from Duquesne University, Ron earned a position as bass trombonist with the United States Air Force Band stationed near Los Angeles, California.Residing in the LA/Orange County area afforded him the opportunity to study with a variety of west coast studio and orchestral trombonists.After discharge from the U.S. Air Force Band, Ron returned to Duquesne University as a graduate assistant in the School of Music where he earned his Master of Music Education degree.In his career as a trombonist, Ron Spang has been called upon to perform in nearly every type of music ensemble and as a soloist for the RCBB.He has performed in such diverse locations as the Hollywood Bowl, NBC studios, Rockefeller Center and Carnegie Hall.He has recorded for Disney and performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival.Additionally, Ron considers himself fortunate to have performed for former Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan and for entertainers such as Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney and Ann Jillian.


Ron Spang has remained very active as a music educator.He has been teaching instrumental and vocal music to students in the Charleroi Area School District for over twenty years.He also teaches trombone privately at his home studio and for the California University of Pennsylvania.Ron Spang plays a Conn 62H Bass Trombone with a Schilke 59 mouthpiece and is a featured artist for Conn-Selmer Music, Inc.He is a member of the National Association for Music Education (M.E.N.C.), the International Trombone Association (ITA) and the International Musicians Union, Local 60-471.
