“The Song of the Horse: An Evening of Poetry and Music” Featuring Poet Samuel Hazo and the River City Brass Quintet to appear at the LeMont Restaurant, Mt. Washington
On February 16th, 2012 the LeMont Restaurant on Mt. Washington will host The Song of the Horse: An Evening of Poetry and Music”. Sam Hazo, former Poet Laureate of Pennsylvania, will take the stage for a special poetry reading accompanied by the music of the River City Brass and Dr. James Gourlay. This performance will mark the first public poetry reading by Mr. Hazo in several years, and the first ever to combine his work with music for brass.
The Poems, drawn from the The Song of the Horse, a 2008 collection of Hazo's works span a creative output of more than 50 years. Interludes by Bach, Mozart, and award-winning composer, Sam Hazo Jr. performed by members of the River City Brass, provides a musical commentary. Some of the poems to be read include My Roosevelt Coupé, The Next Time You Were There, The Real Reason For Going is Not Just To Get There, and Matador’.
This unique collaboration was the idea of Mr. Manning J. O’Connor, a personal friend of Mr. Hazo and member of the Board of Directors of River City Brass. “I found myself thinking more and more about introducing the idea of collaboration between two of my favorite artists,” recalls Mr. O’Connor, “I made the introduction between Mr. Hazo and Dr. Gourlay, and they took it from there.”
“Both Sam and I are excited to combine his powerful words with the musical gifts of the River City Brass. I know that this partnership will make for a unique experience for lovers of music and of poetry.” stated Dr. Gourlay.
The event will take place on February 16th, 2012 at 7:30pm at the iconic Mt. Washington restaurant.
